What Are The Protection Ratings For Industrial PC Aluminum Enclosures

The aluminum enclosure of an industrial PC serves as the main structural housing for embedded industrial computers, industrial all-in-one PCs and edge computing hosts. Its protection rating directly determines the equipment stability under harsh working conditions with dust, moisture, water spray and outdoor exposure. The industry widely adopts the IP protection system defined by IEC 60529 (Chinese national standard GB/T 4208). This article introduces common IP ratings for industrial PC aluminum enclosures, their definitions, applicable scenarios and how protection is achieved via aluminum housing structure. It supports procurement specialists, structural engineers and ODM customers for customized selection.

Industrial operating environments differ greatly from commercial office settings. Workshop metal dust, cutting fluid splashes, rain outdoors, humid cold storage rooms and high-pressure rinsing on food production lines can all damage internal circuit boards. Aluminum alloy stands out as the preferred material for industrial PC enclosures thanks to its light weight, excellent heat dissipation, high mechanical strength, easy CNC machining for custom molds and corrosion resistance after anodizing. The protection rating is a standardized index to measure the housing's ability to block solid foreign objects and moisture, commonly known as the IP rating (Ingress Protection).

An IP code consists of the prefix IP followed by two digits: The first digit = protection against solid particles / dust (0–6) The second digit = protection against water (0–9K) Higher numbers represent stronger protection. Important note: The protection rating depends on the complete sealing solution instead of the aluminum material alone. Sealing gaskets, panel compression design, waterproof cable glands and screw stop structures together determine the final IP grade. The aluminum shell is only the base carrier.

1. Dust Protection (1st digit: 0~6)

0: No protection against dust. Usually used inside clean cabinets.

1: Prevents access of solid objects ≥50 mm.

2: Prevents finger contact with internal components (objects ≥12.5 mm).

3: Blocks tools and wires ≥2.5 mm.

4: Blocks fine wires and foreign objects ≥1 mm.

5: Dust protected. Limited dust ingress is allowed, but dust will not cause equipment failure. Aluminum shells with simple sealing for moderately dusty workshops.

6: Dust-tight. No dust can enter the housing. It is the mainstream dust specification for high-protection industrial aluminum enclosures, widely adopted for industrial all-in-one PCs and embedded hosts.

2. Water Protection (2nd digit: 0~9K)

0: No water resistance.

1: Protected against vertically falling water drops.

2: Protected against dripping water when the enclosure is tilted up to 15°.

3: Protected against spraying water; resistant to water spray within a 60° angle.

4: Protected against splashing water from any direction. Suitable for stations with cutting fluid splashes.

5: Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Withstands regular workshop rinsing.

6: Protected against powerful high-pressure water jets.

7: Protected against temporary immersion under specified depth and duration. Not for permanent underwater use.

8: Protected against continuous immersion for long-term underwater operation. Requires specially sealed aluminum housing structure.

9K: Protected against high-temperature and high-pressure steam cleaning. Designed for food and pharmaceutical production lines.

3. Common Protection Ratings for Industrial PC Aluminum Enclosures

IP20

Protects against finger access, no water resistance. Aluminum shells generally have no sealing grooves or gaskets. Widely used for embedded industrial hosts installed inside electrical cabinets in dry and clean indoor environments. Lowest-cost industrial aluminum enclosure solution.

IP40

Blocks solid objects ≥1 mm, not waterproof. Simple seam compression structure. Suitable for industrial PCs and gateway housings inside automation control cabinets without water spray.

IP54

Limited dust protection + protection against splashing water from all directions. Aluminum shells fitted with sealing gaskets, without waterproof connectors. Ideal for ordinary manufacturing workshops with minor dust and occasional cutting fluid splashes, where direct rinsing does not occur.

IP65 【Most Popular Grade for Industrial PCs】

Dust-tight + protected against low-pressure water jets. CNC-machined aluminum housing with sealing grooves and silicone gaskets. Panels and covers are tightly compressed for sealing. Waterproof glands can be equipped on interfaces. It covers most automation production lines, semi-outdoor control boxes, packaging machinery and robot control cabinets. This is also the highest-demand specification for B-end overseas procurement of industrial aluminum enclosures.

IP67 【High-Protection Enclosure for Embedded Hosts & Industrial Panels】

Dust-tight + protected against temporary immersion. Higher requirements for sealing structure. All seams and cable outlets of the aluminum housing must be fully sealed. Precise flatness control and optimized screw layout are required. Suitable for outdoor equipment, vehicle-mounted industrial computers, humid underground environments and outdoor monitoring devices. Many rugged industrial all-in-one aluminum enclosures are custom-molded to IP67.

IP68 / IP69K 【Premium Special Industrial Aluminum Enclosures】

IP68 allows long-term underwater submersion. IP69K withstands high-temperature high-pressure jet cleaning. Extremely strict tolerance control for aluminum housing flatness and sealing grooves. Anodizing treatment is matched with professional sealing structures. Mainly applied in food processing, livestock equipment, deep-water monitoring and pharmaceutical cleaning lines. High customization cost and rarely used for standard industrial PCs.

Additional note: NEMA standards are often requested in North American projects. NEMA ratings cannot be directly converted to IP grades. Clarify the standard required by customers for overseas orders.

4. Key Factors for High Protection on Aluminum Enclosures

A common misunderstanding: 6063 / 6061 aluminum alloy is only the base material. The metal itself does not provide sealing or waterproof performance.

CNC machining: Control flatness of sealing surfaces and machine grooves for sealing gaskets.

Sealing components: Silicone or fluororubber gaskets are the core of protection.

Structural design: Split aluminum shell compression design and evenly distributed locking screws.

Interface matching: Standard USB and Ethernet ports are not waterproof. Waterproof connectors must be adopted.

Surface treatment: Anodizing or powder coating improves corrosion resistance and extends gasket service life, but does NOT upgrade the IP rating.

5. Selection Guidelines

Dry cabinet installation: IP20 / IP40 preferred. Cost-effective and easier for heat dissipation design.

General factory with dust and occasional rinsing: IP65 is recommended. Mature off-the-shelf and custom mold options balance cost and protection.

Open-air, humid or risk of temporary submersion: Custom IP67 aluminum enclosures.

Food industry with high-temperature rinsing: Special IP69K sealing solution.

Important reminder: The overall protection rating follows the weakest point. Even if the aluminum shell reaches IP67, the full equipment will be downgraded if the front panel or connectors fail to meet the same standard. When starting OEM/ODM mold development for industrial PC aluminum enclosures, define the target IP rating and sealing scheme at the early design stage.

Conclusion

Higher IP rating is not always better. Over-specifying to IP67 or IP68 will raise processing cost and bring challenges to thermal design. Selecting the right aluminum housing according to working conditions ensures stable equipment operation and controls production cost. With growing demand for edge computing and outdoor industrial devices, IP65 and IP67 custom sealed aluminum enclosures remain key product lines for aluminum extrusion manufacturers serving the industrial control sector.
